I recently had the opportunity to visit this beautiful Charles Rennie Mackintosh house with a group of friends.

The house belonged to Mr W. J. Bassett-Lowke who was a well known miniature model maker and model railway engineer. His Father had bought the house for him and when he met Mackintosh in 1916 they transformed it from a modest (well small) terraced house into a real thing of beauty. He married and brought his wife there in 1917. They lived there for nine years and then built  another arts and crafts house in another part of the city. After that it went through many hands until it was eventually fully restored to as near as possible as Mackintosh and he had made it. The rstoration included the purchase of the property next door to become a museum and to make access to the actual house much easier for visitors to move about. It is well worth a visit and they serve lovely meals in the tiny restaurant!, The house had running hot and cold water and also electicity – very unusual in those days.
